It is free to attend. Worship is essential to God’s plan of redemption and provides a strategic avenue for God’s entry into an alienated world. An illustration of this is found in the Lord’s Prayer, which begins with worship: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.” Then, it extends the invitation “…Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9, 10). When we pray in the manner that Jesus taught His disciples, we are first, with worship, reaching into the invisible realm and then, on the grounds of our worship, welcoming the entry of His divine authority, rulership, and power into this world. At Wesley, we believe that a natural reflection of our love for God is worship. Raised in Galesburg, Illinois, Bradley has been serving in ministry at various levels throughout Illinois since 1994.  After earning a B.A. from Illinois State University (1997) and a Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary (2000), his more recent appointments were at Champaign Faith UMC (2000-2015) and Coal City UMC (2015-2022).  Coming to Charleston Wesley UMC on July 1, 2022, Brad is excited to be a part of a grace-filled community and a part of a ministry team ready to change the world.  In addition to serving the local church, Brad works with community first responders as a community chaplain.  Brad and Erin have been married since 1996 and have three children: Andrew, Jacob, and Tyler. They are big sports fans, especially baseball, where Brad is often coaching young players about the love of the game and teamwork, along with the fundamentals. Oh, and they are big Cubs fans!!     A native Texan, granddaughter of a Methodist circuit rider, preacher’s wife for 32 years before his death, and third-grade teacher for almost 30 years, Janice has just retired from 17 years of being a licensed local pastor in the Northwest Texas and New Mexico United Methodist Conferences. Moving to be closer to her daughter (an educational academic advisor at EIU) , son-in-law (who is a professor at EIU) and granddaughter Ella (a 7th grader). Most times away are spent back in TX keeping up with her TX family, including a granddaughter and husband both in graduate school and a grandson (a university student.) She has found Wesley UMC to be a special place where her soul can be filled and where she can sing in the choir and play hand bells. Other favorite pastimes are reading, cooking Mexican food, playing the piano, eating out with friends, and attending musical concerts and dramas. Kait grew up in Winnebago, IL. After meeting her husband, Sam, while attending the University of Illinois Springfield, she moved to Charleston, IL. Kait graduated from Lake Land College in 2019 with an Associate's in Business Administration, and the University of Illinois Springfield with a Bachelor's of Business Administration in 2020. Since 2022, Kait has volunteered with VBS and Youth Group at Wesley. She's excited that God answered a prayer and brought her to serve at Wesley as the Coordinator of Communications. Kait enjoys spending time with her husband and raising their two boys, Grant and Will, with a baby sibling on the way. Her family are also animal lovers, having 2 German Shepherds, 2 cats, and a bearded dragon at home.  Sarah grew up in Coffeen, Illinois, attending Coffeen United Methodist Church, serving as song leader, Community Vacation Bible School Director, and coordinating the Community-Wide Summer Food Program. Sarah moved to Charleston after graduating from Hillsboro High School in 2015. That year, she started attending Wesley UMC and the EIU Wesley Foundation. She worked 6 years at Consolidated Communications while completing college courses. She is excited that her call to ministry has led her to serve at Wesley.  She now lives in Shelbyville with her husband, Brandon; their Corgi, Hazel; and their cat, Scout. Sarah and her husband enjoy finding time for traveling, trying new restaurants, and exploring local small-town shops.   Michael Mellott is the adult and children’s choral director for the Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston, Illinois. He is also the music teacher and choral director at the local middle school, where he teaches 7th and 8th grades general music, as well as conducts the middle school choir and an extracurricular a cappella advanced choir. In addition to his teaching, he is also a clinician for vocal health for educators, athletic coaches, and vocalists.   He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois, where he and his family reside.   When time permits, Mr. Mellott performs with the local community summer theatre and enjoys woodworking and cane making, where he often donates handcrafted items to various organizations, such as Out *of Darkness* (a suicide prevention and awareness organization).  Elizabeth has served for many years as an administrator and educator, as well as a pianist, singer, and actor. When not involved in church music ministry and administration, she can be found teaching music and working in local theatre as an actor and music director. She is married to actor and playwright Earl Halbe. Both Earl and Elizabeth are the founders and co-producers of Theatre In The Park, Charleston, IL.  Ethan Hayward comes to us from Chillicothe, IL, with his higher education musical training from Millikin and EIU. Ethan’s musical experience includes serving several local churches and public schools in our area, playing for various musical theatre productions, accompanying local musicians and students, and providing private piano instruction.  Kaylie Hutton is a current student at Eastern Illinois University studying criminal psychology. Kaylie grew up in Charleston and has gone to Vacation Bible School at Wesley every summer growing up. She has years of experience working with children having babysat since she was 11. She has always had a love for seeing kids learn and grow.  Cole Dearnbarger was raised in Charleston, Illinois. Cole started at Wesley in the summer of 2023. In his free time, he enjoys spending time outdoors, hanging out with his 3 daughters, and riding his unicycle. We invite you to get involved! See below a variety of current service opportunities. If you have questions about an opportunity or wish to get involved, please contact the church office at 217-345-3917. Volunteers in Kids Ministry serve families and children of our Pre-K to 6th graders during weekend worship services through children's church and Sunday School. They lead classrooms, provide assistance to classroom teachers and step in where an extra hand is needed. We're always looking for great individuals to love and serve our kids, and help show the love of Christ to them. If you're someone who would like to serve, or just know a little bit more about Kids Ministry, connect with us! **Sunday Gatherings:** Those serving in our Youth Ministry on Sundays get the opportunity to build and foster relationships with our youth members. Opportunities to serve during Sunday School and Youth Group are available. **Annual Mission Trip**: Wesley's Youth annually adventure to Appalachia to participate in Appalachia Service Project. This annual mission trip takes place in June/July each year. If you are interested in getting your Youth involved (must be 8th grade - 12th grade) or yourself being an Adult Leader, email the church office at charlestonwesleyumc@gmail.com. **Sunday Gatherings:** Our Sunday morning gatherings are the beginning for most people at Wesley. We need people who can serve as greeters, liturgists, and ushers, as well as members of the worship and hospitality teams.  **Ministry Specific Volunteers:** A variety of ministries happen at Wesley UMC that impact those within the church, the Charleston Area Community, and Regional and National areas too. **General Volunteers:** Wesley UMC always welcomes your talents, gifts, and fellowship! Wesley is actively looking to build a list of people who want to get involved, but are open to serving in areas that are needed. We grow through Bible studies, prayer groups, worship events, and Sunday School. We invite you to learn more about getting involved below! The Living Word Sunday School Class has grown and moved to Room 113 (by the Scout Room in the Fellowship Hall) Grab some goodies at Hospitality Time and bring them to the library from 9:45-10:45 every Sunday morning. The “Voices” Sunday School Class, are a multi-generational, open-minded and informal gathering of people who come together to develop and grow in our Christian walks by exploring what it means to live a Christian life in our world today. We do so by engaging in and actively sharing in weekly class discussions on thought-provoking issues and topics. At times, we explore contemporary issues, and at other times we focus on deepening our understanding of our Christian faith. To this end, we use a variety of sources including books, articles, and DVD series featuring major theologians and/or religious historians of our day. Our approach is inclusive and non-traditional. Ultimately, we believe that Jesus calls us to care for our neighbors through action. If you think this is a class that might interest you, we would love to have you join us. College students are welcome! Small Groups are an intentional way to grow in your faith and your church family. Small Groups are open to every generation and happen at various times through the week. Explore where you can land below. A small group at Wesley for Young Adults ages 20-40. They will be meeting Wednesday nights at 6 pm in the Parables Room along with the occasional outing/dinner. Contact Sarah Gatton for any questions or if you are interested in joining.  Women's Study meets Wednesday Mornings at 8am in the Wesley UMC Parlor. This group rotates study throughout the year. Contact the church office to get connected! Meets at **7:30am** on Tuesdays in the Wesley UMC Library led by Lowell Gillespie. Please contact the church office to get connected! A small group for our 50 and better adults! This group prioritizes faith, fun, and community! Young at Heart regularly meets for trips, food, movies, conversation, and more! Pastor Brad regularly hosts bible studies in the fall and spring semesters during weekly evenings. Kids Ministry is a safe, secure, and open minded place for newborns through 5th grade. Looking to get your older child involved? Click here to learn more about Youth Opportunities. You will be welcomed with a smile as our team introduces themselves and gets to know you and your family. We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early so you can get introduced to our kid's ministry team and ask any questions you may have. Families will be asked to fill out our New Kid Registration form. You can fill out the new Kids registration form ahead of time online at the link above. Sunday mornings during service we invite our kindergarten through 6th grade students to participate in Children's Church. This takes place during the sermon time where kids are invited to head to our education wing with Children's Director Ms. Sarah for a children's lesson and activity. Children are also invited to Sunday School between services beginning at 9:45am each Sunday. A staffed nursery and childcare are offered during Sunday morning services as well as special events throughout the week noted on the church calendar. If you ever need childcare for a church event, we invite you to reach out to the church office. Ms. Sarah has been leading the Kids Min team at Wesley UMC since 2022. Ms. Sarah greets every family with a smile and you can often find her leading Children's Church, Elementary Age Sunday School, and leading Kids Ministry Special Events. You can find Kaylie in the nursery on Sunday mornings and leading Wesley's Pre-K Sunday School Classroom. Kaylie began her role as the Nursery Coordinator in 2024, after serving for many years as Wesley's Nursery Assisant. Wesley Youth Group is a place to find belonging, life long friendships, and fun. Wesley Youth is open to 6th-12th graders and meets regularly on Sunday evenings. It all starts with Youth Group.
